EMPU stands for Enhanced Multilingual Programming Utility. Basically EMPU is a lightweight text editor with many of the features of an IDE. There are several applications in existence that accomplish parts this goal, however each has its own downside.

Many applications, such as Geany or TextPad, require users to define their own command line parameters and add a new build button to the interface. Also, changes to the build commands can be messy and counter-intuitive. These applications also lack a convenient project management system. With EMPU, the plan is to eliminate these issues entirely.

EMPU features custom build commands for each file type as well as unique commands for each individual project. These commands can edited by the user as well. Project configuration files will be very small – aprx. a few KB. Large project files (like in Visual Studio) are unnecessary and very inconvenient when transferring and backing up projects. EMPU will also features a project merge system to easily update projects to a new version.

Another intended feature is a basic version control system. The system will keep track of all code changes between versions. If you choose, all changes will be logged and stored with your project. Using this data, an automatic change log can be generated with the click of a button. Committing changes to a project can be done through either a Commit or Merge feature. Keep in mind, this will be only be a basic system. It will be fast and it will be effective, however it will not be as feature-rich as something like Git. On that note, Git integration is also being considered.
